Philoxenia Hotel - HERO

A real find! The accommodation was excellent with great attention to detail and very clean. Very convenient location in the centre of Town. The Owner had gone the extra mile and decorated it for Christmas. Would highly recommend. 

Comfortable & relaxing experience

A beautiful hotel set back from the beach.  Its gardens, rooms and restaurants are very well maintained. 

The special thing about this place is it staff. From check in through to every single person we engaged with, they had a smile and only good things to say about the hotel management and the care given to the staff. 

Big praise to Killiakos (I may have misspelled) and Claudia in the bar. Also to the male Life Guard who stood on duty all day every day making sure our children were safe. Finally to Aris and Michael in the restaurant who made our children laugh and smile. 

In summary, the pools were immaculately clean and crystal clear. The food in the restaurant was plentiful and fresh and the accommodation well presented. 

The free safe and free air conditioning was a pleasant surprise. 

The hotel is nestled about 6 minutes walk from the beach where a number of places provide good quality sun beds in return for your custom. 

The resort/beach area itself has a handful of restaurants which was plenty for a week. Some take cards and some only cash. 

Overall we had a great holiday at this hotel and would definately recomend this as a place for singles, couples or families with and without young children.

It’s took me over 6 months to write this and I’ll still keep it brief as I don’t want to revisit it
The cruelty to cats is unbearable, the staff kick at them, the cleaners pour bleach water over food, the German guest chucked stones at them, the guest kids pulled kittens legs and tails and would separate them around the hotel away from their mother
Kittens were dying in broadday light 
The local shop keepers hate them too
All the cats are thirsty and drink pool water or shop keepers leave mop buckets with bleach water out
The Greeks do not like cats, they see them as vermin and there is no humanity in doing anything good by them
The cute hotel cats will either die or starvation/ be killed or be thrown in the countryside where there is no food once the season is over. It’s torture to see. 
The hotel owner who walks around all day probably is the r richest man in Halkidiki, why doesn’t he spend some of that money and make the town great by having higher ethical standards for the cats, and the dogs. We are modern Europe now I need to move with the times. There are village dogs too who just need love and vet treatment, and the shop keepers have no shame about how they are all manky, they seem to feel heroic as they let the dogs get some shade or a few scraps. Cats however are less fortunate. 
The staff at the hotel are quiet horrible, in particular the restaurant head staff, a bellowing woman and a charming older man. Both seem to be close friends of the owner rather than trained in hospitality. It seems the owner keeps his types of friends in the team as they have the same hard line / money grabbing/ customers are money machines rather than human beings, kind of attitude. The older man would talk and joke about women customers, very sleazy and chauvinistic to younger girl staff who had to laugh as he is more powerful. The older women would bark at you and had a disdain for people. The younger staff were all lovely, but under the iron rod of a few key older staff and the owner who walks around all day, they couldn’t be free and be warm with people, as it’s not the culture that’s promoted
The spa woman, who was not supervised, was a wonderful warm woman and the entertainment girls were warm too. But any bar or restaurant staff being watched by the older types weren’t able to be as warm. It seemed like a hard working environment 
Halkadiki town is small and if it’s off season is quiet a claustrophobic place

Cried every day

I recently returned from a week-long visit at Philoxeniahotel with my mother, daughter and grandchildren. 

I'll start with the good stuff.
The staff are amazing and friendly. Always smiling and ready to make sure you have what you need. 

The grounds are delightful, we were in a pool view room so had use of the quiet pool which was divine. Quiet and peaceful just what I was looking for.  

The rooms were clean and suitably furnished, and gowns and slippers were supplied for our use.

The local beach was beautiful, gently slopping into a crystal clear sea, safe for children.
Sunbeds and parasols are available for use if you purchase a very reasonably priced drink and there is no time limit. 

The problems however took the shine off.  I had to change the person I was travelling with and had emailed before arrival to check if the double room. could be made into a twin.  I was told that the maximum the beds could be separated was 5cm and all beds were the same. I advise that would be fine .not was the separate bed that mattered not the distance between them. You can imagine my disappointment on arrival to find a double bed that could not be separated into singles. I complained and was told there was nothing they could do. 

Three very sleepless nights later they offered us a two-bedroom suite ( one bedroom. and a very uncomfortable hard sofa bed)  which we could upgrade to for €40 per night.   Of course, we accepted it as we were desperate for a good night's sleep.  Having already paid a huge amount for this holiday it was disappointing that we had to pay more. 

The food was ok. On our arrival day and the first few days the food was great but as the week went on it became very disappointing with minimal options.

 Traveling with autistic people meant food was a big issue and there were several meals where there was nothing plain that they could eat.  Even I as a foodie found it difficult some meals to find something would enjoy.

We were allocated 330ml of water in our room Per person per day. All other water had to be gotten from the bar. We were all-inclusive and water was only available without payment between the hours of 10 am and 11 pm. Ask at 11.01 and it's too late. 

The snacks on offer were very limited , small sausages or Ham in a tiny bit of baguette and were  sat out under a cover in the heat, ice creams were very nice but tiny and only available during limited hours. 

The pool was disappointing.  No fun allowed! No toys or floats of any description, no jumping in, no splashing.  Allough the pool officially closes at 7 pm the lifeguard starts closing it at 6.30 putting sunshades down despite them being used in 37-degree heat blocking the steps into the pool with a bollard and putting chains around even if there are people still in the pool.  Making it feel very inhospitable. 

Recommendations I would make to the hotel. 

• Instal handrails on stairs to make them safer for anyone who struggles 

• a handrail in the shower would be very helpful 

•A deep topper on the sofa beds to make them more comfortable to sleep on 

• larger bottle of water in the rooms 

•Only start closing the pool when it actually closes.

A lovely place , friendly staff but not without problems

This was our second stay at the hotel. The staff make this hotel wonderful, from the ladies on reception, the chambermaids through to the lovely chefs and waiting team. We had a superior room which was garden facing, this is my only niggle that it's facing the car park.
