Gozo Island, Gozo

Gozo Island

Gozo Island is the second smallest of the islands found in the Maltese archipelago.

Compared to other Mediterranean islands, Gozo offers an entirely different style of holiday. The Gozitan countryside is dotted with charming villages and still manages to show its traditional character. It also has a more relaxed atmosphere that can be seen even through the Gozitan and baroque architecture found in the towns and villages on the island.

When to go

Weather in Malta is typically Mediterranean and August is the hottest month with temperatures reaching up to 30℃. This makes August the best month for swimming in the sea as the temperatures in the water tend to match that of the air.

Top Attractions

Besides all the beaches to relax on, Gozo is home to many other attractions worth checking out.

Victoria, the medieval hilltop village and capital, is known as a miniature Jerusalem. The Citadel is full of historical monuments and places of relevance to visit and learn about Malta.

The Azure Window, a famous photogenic spot in Malta, is formed from the limestone of two cliffs collapsing. Apart from being a great photo opportunity, it’s an excellent spot for diving and snorkelling.

Marsalforn is a perfect fishing town to spend the day exploring laid-back Malta. During high season, the bay is swarming with holidaymakers and locals enjoying the sunshine.

Like the rest of Malta, Gozo has an abundance of churches and places of worship to take in while visiting.

Beaches

With an average of 300 days of sunshine a year, it’s no wonder the shores of Malta are some of the top attractions for visitors. Gozo is no different! The sea water is crystal clear and warm all year, making it perfect for swimming, scuba diving and snorkelling.

Ramla Beach is one of the best in Gozo. Full of red sand (and not much else…) it’s the perfect place to relax. Although most of the area around the beach is still undeveloped, there are a few cafes to keep you going throughout the day.

San Blas Beach is also made from red sand but is smaller and more peaceful that Ramla due to the steep and closed road that makes its way there.

Mgarr ix-Xini is another amazing bay set in a rocky valley. Due to its seclusion, it offers a relaxed and tranquil visit, but marine life is easily seen beneath the waves. Just grab a snorkel and dive in!

For a more popular and sociable beach, visit Marsalforn Bay. Whether you want to sunbathe, snorkel or swim, this beach offers it all.

Culture

Step outside the hotel to step into the culture that Gozo has to offer. The Ggantija Temples are some of the oldest freestanding structures in the world. They are even older than Stonehenge!

Feasts are also typical cultural celebrations in Malta and are held in summer months in honour of patron saints.

Dining

Whether you’re looking for traditional Mediterranean food or other cuisines, Gozo isn’t short of restaurants to choose from.

For seafood visit Rew Rew, a simple place with 10 tables serves some of the best seafood on the island. But for traditional Mediterranean food see Qbajjar in Marsalforn, it’s beach views make it a favourite with locals and visitors alike.

Entertainment

Compared to other areas and islands of Malta, Gozo is the quietest of them all. Cafes and bars stay open late for a sociable drink, but Gozo is not the place to go for partying all week long, for that check out Paceville.

Adventure and Sports

The warm waters, coastlines and bays surrounding Gozo make the island and neighbouring Comino ideal for those interested in snorkelling and diving.

Getting Around

After arriving in Malta, transfer to Gozo by ferry from Cirkewwa and Comino islands.

When you have arrived on Gozo Island, travelling by foot is quickly done with many pedestrianised areas and footpaths. But if walking isn’t what you came to Malta to do there is a public bus available or cars to rent.

To get all the main sights seen in one day try the open top red bus that comes equipped with audio commentary in over ten languages.
