Mellieha

Located on the North West corner of Malta, a holiday to Mellieha offers access to some of Malta's best sandy beaches including, one of the largest and most popular beaches on the island - Il Ghadira, more commonly known as Mellieha Bay.

The quiet town of Mellieha itself is situated on a steep hill offering holidaymakers spectacular panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea below, while the larger resort of St Paul's Bay is only a short journey away.

When to go

The climate is typically Mediterranean, similar to that of Southern Italy or Southern Greece. In the summer there is up to 12 hours of sunshine a day. The summer is therefore a great time to visit Mellieha. September is also a good time since it remains warm. It is worth knowing that the rainy season begins in November.

Top Attractions

Although a relatively small town, you will find that a holiday to Mellieha is literally bursting with attractions, particularly in the nearby Popeye Village which is great for families with children.

The Parish Church of Mellieha and The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieħa are worth paying a visit to, especially if you’re keen to soak up culture and history. The Sanctuary of Our Lady is essentially a grotto and interesting to see, even if you are not religious.

The Red Tower offers a grand look-out over Mellieha and is worth paying a visit to also.

Beaches

Whilst large beaches can certainly be found in Mellieha, those looking for a quieter beach will quickly find the picturesque Ramla and Paradise Bays to the north, or the rocky Anchor Bay just beyond the western headland.

For those seeking the delights of Maltese cuisine, a Mellieha holiday offers access to a selection of small, but nevertheless fantastic local restaurants, while a greater variety can be found in the nearby larger towns of Buggiba and Qawra.

In terms of nightlife, Mellieha offers a quieter scene, but you’ll still find many places to have a drink. If you’re looking for sports bar, check out Square Bar. For live music and great cocktails, head to Billy’s Music Club.

The great thing about a holiday in Mellieha is the fact that it gives visitors a true sense of what a real village in Malta is like.

Getting around

Mellieha is located just an hour’s drive from Malta’s International airport. There are some popular bus routes that can take you from the airport to the area, however, you are better off renting a car if you’re holidaying in Mellieha. Those who wish to see another side of the Maltese Islands during their holiday to Mellieha can take a day trip to Gozo or Comino. The ferry port is only a short distance away for Gozo and there are plenty of Comino day trips by speedboat available.
