- Arctic Cruise Expedition to Svalbard
Embark on an unforgettable journey through the remote beauty of the Svalbard archipelago. From towering glaciers and icy fjords to incredible wildlife, including polar bears and whales, this Arctic expedition offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore the wonders of North Spitsbergen’s rugged landscapes and pristine wilderness.
Dinner
Depart the UK on your flight to Longyearbyen, the hub of Spitsbergen, Svalbard’s largest island. Once a bustling mining town, it now offers intriguing attractions such as the Svalbard Museum and the charming parish church. Board your ship in the early evening. As the vessel sails out of Isfjorden, keep your eyes peeled for minke whales, the first of many wildlife encounters on this remarkable voyage.
Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Over the next six days, sail along the remote coastlines of North Spitsbergen, navigating the pack ice and exploring the region’s spectacular landscapes. Flexible itineraries ensure that you experience the very best of what the Arctic has to offer.
Raudfjord
Discover Raudfjord, a breathtaking fjord on Spitsbergen’s north coast. Surrounded by glaciers, this area is a haven for ringed and bearded seals, seabird colonies, and thriving vegetation. Keep a lookout for polar bears as you land at sites such as Alicehamna or Buchananhalvøya.
Monaco Glacier Weather permitting, sail into Liefdefjorden to witness the impressive 5-kilometer-long Monaco Glacier. This area is a prime feeding ground for thousands of kittiwakes and is frequented by polar bears on the hunt. Alternatively, depending on ice conditions, explore the west coast of Spitsbergen for equally stunning scenery.
Hinlopen Strait
Cruise into the wildlife-rich Hinlopen Strait, home to seals, polar bears, and occasionally blue whales. Navigate the ice floes of Lomfjord by Zodiac and visit Alkefjellet, where towering bird cliffs are home to thousands of Brunnich’s guillemots. Landings on Nordaustlandet may reveal sightings of reindeer, pink-footed geese, and walruses.
The Seven Islands
Venture to the Seven Islands, the northernmost point of your voyage. At Chermsideoya or Phippsoya, you may reach 80° north, just 870 km (540 miles) from the North Pole. Here, among the pack ice, you’ll find polar bears and experience the true remoteness of the Arctic.
Sailing the Continental Shelf
On your return journey, sail along the edge of the continental shelf west of Spitsbergen. This upwelling zone attracts fin whales during the summer, offering fantastic whale watching opportunities. Minke whales are also commonly spotted at the mouth of Kongsfjorden.
Forlandsundet, St. Johns Fjord, or Alkhornet
Explore Forlandsundet, where walruses often haul out at Sarstangen or Poolepynten. Alternatively, sail into the serene St. Johns Fjord or visit Alkhornet, where seabirds nest on towering cliffs, Arctic foxes scavenge below, and reindeer graze the sparse tundra vegetation.
Breakfast
Arrive back in Longyearbyen in the early morning, marking the end of your Arctic voyage. Transfer to the airport for your journey home.
