Benalmadena, Costa del Sol

Benalmadena

Located on the Costa del Sol, Benalmadena is known for its sandy beaches and the Tivoli World theme park.

Just under a 15-minute drive from Malaga airport, Benalmadena and its long stretch of sandy beaches make it one of the most popular destinations in the Costa del Sol.

When to go

High season in the Costa del Sol starts in June and ends in September with temperatures reaching the high 20s. The breeze coming from the Mediterranean coast takes the edge off the higher temperatures, making Benalmadena perfect for a relaxing holiday at a beach resort.

In the Costa del Sol, there’s bright sunshine for 300-320 days of the year with an average temperature of 18°C, meaning Benalmadena can be visited in and out of peak season for that bit of Spanish sun.

Top Atrractions

Benalmadena is one of the most popular destinations on the Costa del Sol for a reason and there’s no shortage of things to do. There are three main areas of Benalmadena, each with their own set of attractions. Benalmadena Pueblo:

  • The original village, it hosts the archaeological museum with artefacts dating back to the Bronze Age. Perfect for a bit of history.

Benalmadena Costa:

  • The Marina, one of the biggest in Andalusia, is a big tourist attraction as many can be found walking around the marina viewing luxury yachts and gin palaces (pleasure boats) that are frequently docked here. Sailing and fishing trips are always on offer at the Marina.
  • SeaLife Aquarium is perfect to keep kids entertained (and for those 45 days of the year the sun may not shine as bright).
  • Parque Paloma is a landscaped park home to a large lake and wild animals.

Arroyo de la Miel:

  • Tivoli World Park is the Costa del Sol’s leading amusement park.
  • A Cable Car (teleferico) runs to the summit of the Calamorro mountain and reaches 769m. From here, there are spectacular views of the Sierra Nevada and Gibraltar.

Benalmadena is also home to Colomares Castle - the tallest Buddhist Stupa in all of Europe (33m tall)

Beaches

With 10 kilometres of beach to choose from, Benalmadena has everything. From Carvajal that is perfect for families with activities and amenities on hand, to Arroyo that is popular for swimmers and Tajo de Soga with a more tranquil atmosphere.

Dining

Benalmadena has a place for everyone. Just behind the Malapesquera beach runs a promenade that is home to restaurants and bars. Traditional tapas can be found at most local bars, or locals recommend the Oasis restaurant for Chef’s specials and the Luna Beach Club for evening BBQs.

Entertainment

The town’s 24-hour square and the Marina are the best spots for nightlife, and Puerto Banas is only a taxi ride away for a taste of the Marbella life. But, for those looking for a more authentically Spanish holiday, the old village that is found inland is the place to lose yourself amongst the narrow streets and traditional architecture and culture.

Culture

During the months July and August, Benalmadena have organised ‘Culture in the Streets’ with a collection of free cultural shows all throughout, including jazz and flamenco shows and classical music performances.

Adventure and Sports

On all of the beaches in the area, boats and jet skis can be hired out for a day of adventure on the Spanish water. The Tivoli World theme park is also a popular choice for action. For those who don’t mind heights, the cable car experience is a must-do!

Getting Around

Travelling from the airport to Benalmadena, a taxi is recommended, although drivers rarely use a meter, so be sure to check the prices before you travel.

Bus services in Benalmadena are every 15-30 minutes depending on the destination. Trains run between Fuengirola and Malaga that serve Benalmadena.
