Costa Calma, Fuerteventura

Costa Calma

The south coast resort of Costa Calma in Fuerteventura prides itself on being a beach lovers paradise, boasting magnificent stretches of sandy beaches that run nearly 20 km long to Morro Jable. The inviting Mediterranean sea sets a tranquil backdrop for this area that is extremely popular, especially with surfers.

When to go

Costa Calma enjoys a warm climate all year round, meaning it’s popular with visitors all year round. From April to October, Costa Calma is best for a beach holiday as these are the warmest months. Temperatures reach up to 27℃, and there is very little rainfall. But, winter is mild as temperatures still reach 20℃ on average.

Top Attractions

Costa Calma is mainly famous for water sports, but there are two shopping centres that attract visitors.

The Sotavento Centre is home to a well-stocked supermarket as well as souvenir and clothing stores. El Palmeral, on the other hand, is more of a market hall than a shopping centre.

Oasis Park Zoo and Nature Park is also a good day out for those visiting with children. Not only do you see animals in an unconventional zoo (they are interested in species protection) you can also swim with sea lions and take a camel ride while here!

You can also take a day tour of Fuerteventura starting in Sotavento, going along the coast and past the mountains to Betancuria National Park. Visit a goat farm in harbour city Puerto del Rosario to taste traditional Canarian food. The tour goes all the way to Corralejo, the most northern part of Fuerteventura.

Beaches

Most of the beaches in Costa Calma are popular with wind and kite surfers, but they can be perfect for relaxing on, too.

Playa de la Barca is a well-developed beach that hosts the Windsurfing and Kiteboarding World Cup each year. The small beach fills with water at high tide during the new and full moon, effectively creating a lagoon to swim in.

Risco del Paso is only a 20-minute drive from Costa Calma and is another excellent wind and kite surfing spot. The soft yellow sand and blue waters are overlooked by the El Paso hills that gave the beach its name.

Costa Calma Beach is a vast and sandy beach with both quiet spots and space for activities. The small waves and calm waters make it perfect for swimming.

Just a 10-minute drive south from Costa Calma you’ll find Playa Esmeralda, a beach surrounded by a small cliffs with fine sand that stretches into the calm sea. Last (but not least!) is El Rancho, a beach made up half of soft sand and half soft round pebbles. It is another good spot for swimming and snorkelling.

Dining

A lot of restaurants in Costa Calma are German-run and some turn into dancefloors as the night goes on.

For traditional tapas, visit La Goleta. Although it’s on the other side of the motorway, the food makes it well worth the trip.

La Galeria restaurant and bar overlooks the sea from a heated terrace. This German-run restaurant offers Mediterranean and pasta dishes as well as German beers. Yum!

Entertainment

Nightlife in Costa Calma is lacking due to it being a purpose-built resort. After spending the day at the beach and taking part in all the watersports, why not spend the evening relaxing in one of the cafes or bars?

Adventure and Sports

On the beaches of Costa Calma, windsurfing and kiteboarding are popular, but there are also other water sports to take part in as well, including:

  • Surfing school
  • Jet skis
  • Banana boats
  • Quad bikes are also available around Costa Calma beach.
