San Miguel

A taste of traditional Tenerife awaits in San Miguel de Abona – the mountainous valley found in the south of the largest of the Canary Islands.

One of the oldest towns to be found on the island, it is a place you’ll find the real Tenerife alive and well, complete with historic buildings, time-honoured cuisine and peaceful, local life.

When to go

With a year-round climate to be envious of, choosing to visit San Miguel in summer or winter-time will afford you pleasant temperatures and minimal rainfall. The coolest months of the year are December to January, and even these times enjoy an average temperature of 18°C, though it’s not uncommon for that to reach as high as 22°C. In the hotter months – July and August – the average is 25°C but you can expect regular days of 28°C - 30°C.

Top Attractions

The chance to experience local culture and real Canarian life is the main attraction of San Miguel. From the classical architecture that can be viewed while meandering through the winding streets and alleys, to the picturesque countryside consisting of rolling hills and deep valleys, you’ll be sure to get a real feel of rural living.

Beaches

It’s located on the water-front, so San Miguel does have a marina, but not a beach. So, if you’re looking for a break from the traditional atmosphere and wish to seek out a bit of sunbathing instead, the beaches of Costa Adeje and Playa de las Americas are a very short drive away.

Dining

The charismatic streets of this old town offer a plethora of quaint bistros tucked around every corner. For a romantic setting, the superb mezzanine dining area found within the 18th Century townhouse La Tasquita de Nino is pretty hard to beat. The seafood fare of Rinconcito de Hilario is fresh and delicious. Or for something closer to figurative home, The Reef Fish & Chip Shop comes highly recommended.

Entertainment

The tranquil nature of this sleepy town means there’s no room for late-night bars or clubs, or much in the way of nightlife at all. If you’re looking to liven things up after the lazy days and quiet surroundings, the far bubblier Playa de las Americas is within easy reach.

Culture

To soak in some of the local surroundings, as well as a bit of warm sunshine, Horse Riding Adventures offers fantastic views of the sea, mountains and overall Canarian countryside.

Reserva Ambiental de San Blas is an eco-tour that offers splendid views of the ravine as well as plenty of education from the local guides.

Adventure and Sports

A remarkable experience can be had with a Submarine Safari at the Marina San Miguel. And after you’ve resurfaced, a hike along the walking trails of one of the oldest inhabited villages in the south of Tenerife throws up an abundance of stunning vistas.

For something a bit more technical and sporty, the holiday resort Golf del Sur is located with the San Miguel municipality, where you’ll find two 18-hole courses which offer much more than rolling greens, including a golf school and shop, tennis courts and a restaurant.

The short trip to the water sports of Playa de Las Americas may also appeal.

Getting around

Buses and taxis are available to get around and are especially necessary if you want to head out to one of the many nearby resorts. public transport on the other hand can be sporadic, so plan in advance where possible and allow yourself extra time to get about.
