Grand Baie, North Coast Mauritius

Grand Baie

A lively resort on the northwest coast of Mauritius, Grand Baie, with its natural harbour, beaches, shops and culture, offers a holiday to suit everyone. It is a great base for exploring the north of the island, or venturing to smaller nearby islands.

Whether you want to have a go at an adventurous water sport or go sightseeing in the local area, Grand Baie has something for you.

When to go

Offering between 7 and 9 hours of warm sunshine per day throughout the year, Mauritius, with its tropical climate, will not experience temperatures below 22°C even during its coolest month, July. Temperatures into the mid-thirties can be enjoyed throughout November, December, making it an appealing time for visitors. With that being said, temperatures are pleasant year-round, but conditions aren’t ideal in January, February and March when the region experiences the most rainfall.

Top Attractions

Whilst all the action seems to be at the seaside, there are many attractions to be found inland, too. The Chateau De Labourdinnais is a museum and historic mansion with rum tasting. For those looking for some retail therapy, there are plenty of stores throughout the town’s malls.

Beaches

The town boasts its own picturesque beach within the bay, where the rippling blue waters are dotted with yachts and boats making the most of the natural harbour. The area also an abundance of beaches within a few short kilometers, including quieter coves, beaches with water sports and great spots for swimming.

Dining

The busy town, which hugs the bay’s coastline, has a huge choice of dining options. Many smaller restaurants are popular for their authentic local cuisine, particularly the fresh seafood. But, there is also a great choice of dining options with flavours from around the world.

One thing is for sure, great hospitality is guaranteed wherever you decide to enjoy your evening meal.

Entertainment

Days in Grand Baie can be rounded off by enjoying a relaxing cocktail or coffee while soaking up the atmosphere. If you’re looking for something slightly more lively, there is also a bowling alley, a couple of casinos, karaoke bars, nightclubs and bars nearby to keep you entertained.

Culture

The elegant and intricately decorated Tamil Surya Oudaya Sangam Temple, in its lovely, peaceful setting, is one of many examples of the spiritual heritage in Mauritius.

The Notre Dame Auxiliatrice and Ronaq-Ul-Islam Sunnee Mosque are other stunning landmarks to explore. If you’re timing is right you may experience one of the Ganesh festivals.

Adventure and Sports

Grand Baie is a perfect base for enjoying the activities on the water. Try out scuba diving, swim with dolphins, take a speedboat tour of nearby smaller islands or a sailing trip. You can even try parasailing or hire out a jet ski!
