A full day tour of Delhi commences after breakfast, beginning with the historic Old Delhi in the morning. Lying side by side, Old Delhi dates back to the Mughal period, whilst New Delhi was built just over a hundred years ago. Travelling through the narrow and crowded streets on a rickshaw will transport you back in time, passing vibrant food markets of Old Delhi where bread makers bake delicious scented naan from the tandoor ovens and chai wallahs brew their sweet tea. A visit to the regal Red Fort gives you a sense of the lavish life once led by the former rulers before stopping for lunch in a local restaurant. Your tour will continue on to New Delhi to see the Mahatma Gandhi memorial and the 12th century Qutab Minar. Built on the foundations of Jain and Hindu temples, the complex was built in 1193 after the defeat of Delhi's last Hindu kingdom and displays fine examples of Indo-Islamic architecture as well as the tallest stone tower in India. You will also you'll drive past the India Gate, President's House, Parliament Building and visit the Birla Temple, made purely out of 2,000 tons of Rajasthani white marble.

Delhi to Agra

After breakfast, you will be driven to Agra arriving at your hotel in time for lunch. Despite being a small city, Agra was once the capital of the mighty Mughal dynasty whose strength manifested itself in the huge forts and buildings built to maintain its power. During the afternoon, you will visit the vast red sandstone Agra Fort. The colossal walled city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, built by the Mughals in 1573 and boasts gigantic pavilions, grand palaces and spectacular courtyards.

Agra to Ranthambore

This magical day starts after breakfast with a tour of one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Taj Mahal. Words do not do this remarkable palace justice; it really must be seen to appreciate its stupendous beauty. Taking 17 years and 20,000 men to build, the heartbroken Mughal Emperor Shahjahan dedicated this stunning white marble monument of love to his deceased wife to enshrine her mortal remains. Lunch on the way to Ranthambore. Following this, you will begin your journey to Ranthambore National Park where you will spend the night.

Spread over 1,344 square kilometers, Ranthambore National Park is one of the biggest and most renowned national parks in Northern India. Once a famous hunting ground for the gallant rulers of Jaipur, today it is home to a variety of species including tigers, leopards, striped hyenas, jackals, jungle cats and many more. Depart your hotel for an early morning jungle safari (safari by canter) where you may even be able to spot the elusive tiger. You will return to your hotel for breakfast and lunch with some leisure time where you can take advantage of the hotel's outdoor swimming pool. A second safari (safari by canter) trip will follow in the afternoon to visit further areas of the park.

Ranthambore to Jaipur

After breakfast, today you will journey to the Pink City of Jaipur, which got its name from the distinctive earthy red-coloured buildings, painted to emulate the red sandstone architecture of the ancient Mughal cities. Lunch and dinner will be served at your hotel with the rest of the day as free time to relax or explore the largest city in Rajasthan.

After breakfast, begin your first day in Jaipur with a visit to the spectacular Amber Fort, the ancient capital of the royal family until 1728, located just 11km from Jaipur. Spanning over four huge courtyards, you will travel to the centre of the fort by Jeep, passing snake charmers, harems of the Maharajah and the Palace of Mirrors along the way which all make for a truly unforgettable morning. After lunch at local restaurant you can visit some of the local bazaars and stalls for shopping. Try the Jal Mahal Road and Bapu Bazar for jewellery, handicrafts, textile and more, or wander the streets and sample the delicious and unique Rajasthani street food that Jaipur has to offer. Enjoy a traditional dinner with an Indian joint family.

Day 9
Jaipur to Delhi

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast. city tour of Jaipur takes in the major sights including the home of the royal family of Jaipur - The City Palace and the Jantar Mantar, an astronomical observatory. Lastly, marvel at the hundreds of tiny windows on the facade of the Hawa Mahal, known to many as the Palace of Winds (drive past), where it is said that the women of the royal family could once watch the streets below without being seen. You will then commence your return journey to Delhi, stopping for lunch on the way. You will have dinner at your hotel.

Delhi to Colombo

Breakfast

Check out from your hotel and proceed to the airport for your late afternoon flight to Colombo. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in the city.

Colombo to Sigiriya

Following breakfast, embark on a half-day city tour of Colombo. The commercial capital of Sri Lanka. Colombo is a bustling, cosmopolitan city whose colonial history is still very much evident along wide, shaded boulevards and among its Victorian churches and cafes. Begin your city tour by visiting the vibrant temples and bazaars of Pettah, selling seemingly everything from traditional jewelry to Ayurvedic medicines. Next, enjoy a trip to the Old Dutch hospital, a highlight of the restored Fort complex and home to some of Colombo’s chicest restaurants, cafes, and shops. Along with the new additions, a visit to a Buddhist temple and a Hindu Kovil is a must to experience the diverse culture of this lively island. This afternoon, proceed to Sigiriya, where the rest of the day is at leisure before dinner at your hotel.

Sigiriya

This morning, after an early start and cup of tea or coffee, set out to explore the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Accessed by a spiral stairway this ancient palace was built by King Kashyapa (473-491 AD) as his new capital. Explore the remains of the palace and its famous frescoes, created using earth pigments on plaster. Return to the hotel for a late breakfast and a spot of relaxation by the pool. In the afternoon, journey to Polonnaruwa, the second capital of Sri Lanka in the 11th and 12th centuries AD. Explore the ruins of the Royal Palace, the Council Hall, Lotus Bath and the Polonnaruwa statue. After strolling through the ancient city, you’ll drive back to Sigiriya, visiting a Wood Carving Centre en route.

Sigiriya

After breakfast proceed to Anuradhapura Sri Lanka’s 1st capital city. Embark on a tour of the city including a visit to the sacred Bo Tree, the oldest living human-planted tree in the world, as well as Samadhi Buddha – A statue of the Buddha regarded as one of the finest in Sri Lanka. Return this afternoon back to your hotel in Sigiriya where you can spend the afternoon at leisure or head out on an optional bird watching or nature ramble.

Sigiriya to Kandy

After breakfast proceed to the Dambulla Rock Temple, a World Heritage site and the most impressive of Sri Lanka’s cave temples. This complex of five caves has over 2000 square meters of painted walls and ceilings and contains over 150 images or statues of Buddha. Proceed onwards to Kandy, stopping en route at Matale to visit a Spice Garden where you’ll learn about the variety of spices available in Sri Lanka. On arrival in Kandy check in at your hotel before undertaking a tour of the city. Kandy was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and is a World Heritage Site. Drive around the Lake before visiting the Kandy town and bazaar, an Arts & Crafts Centre, gem museum, and lapidary before returning to your hotel.

Kandy

After breakfast visit the Botanical Garden in Peradeniya. This Botanical Garden was first built as a pleasure garden by a Sinhala king before later being expanded by the British. Its 147 acres provides an amazing variety of trees, plants, and flowers. Continue to the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, where you’ll spend considerable time with these magnificent creatures before returning to Kandy. In the evening visit the Temple of Tooth Relic in time for a Pooja ceremony. Finally enjoy a Cultural Show before returning to your hotel for dinner.

Kandy to Nuwara Eliya

After breakfast proceed to Nuwara Eliya, heart of Sri Lanka's tea making industry. En route visit a tea estate to study the manufacturing process of Ceylon tea. On arrival in Nuwara Eliya, head on a short city tour of the city which includes a walk around a typical local market. Carry on to your hotel for the night.

Day 17
Nuwara Eliya to Colombo

Breakfast & Dinner

After breakfast, return to Colombo via Kitulgala, the location where The Bridge over the River Kwai was filmed. Stop also at the beautiful St. Clairs and Devon waterfalls which make for a great photo opportunity. Finally arrive in Colombo and check in to your hotel in time to spend one final evening in the city.

Our intention is to adhere to the day-to-day itinerary as printed; however, order of events and sightseeing may vary according to local conditions.

If booking more than 12 weeks before departure a deposit of €324.50pp will need to be paid at the time of booking with the full amount payable at 12 weeks prior to departure. The deposit applies to adults and children. If you are within 12 weeks of travel then the full balance of the holiday will be payable.

A visa is required for entry into India. British Citizen Passport Holders will need to obtain a tourist visa. You can apply for an E-visa here no more than 120 days in advance e-visa. Sri Lanka visa requirements

A visa is required for entry into Sri Lanka. You can apply and pay for your visa online. Please visit https://www.srilankaevisa.lk/ to obtain your visa. You should get your approval notice within 24 hours, and you can use this to enter Sri Lanka. A visa can still be obtained when arriving at Colombo airport but visas will cost more on arrival. Alternatively, we work closely with The Travel Visa Company who will be able to arrange your visa for you on your behalf. Please call them on 01270 250 590 and quote "Mercury Holidays". Passports must be valid for a minimum period of six months from the date of arrival in Sri Lanka. Visa requirements are subject to change and obtaining a visa is the responsibility of the traveller and not Mercury Holidays. Please note that final flight details will be confirmed on your e-ticket and final documentation which will be sent to you approximately 21 days before departure. Check-in should be at least 3 hours before departure. IMPORTANT: A printed E-ticket is no longer required at check-in, all you need to do is present your passport to the staff at the desk and your boarding pass will be given to you. Please note that you should carry your invoice with flight details on it as you will need to show this at the airport.

All our tours feature a “Tour Pace” to help find the right holiday for you. To travel on any of our tours requires unaided mobility and the ability to stroll around the sights, climb stairs and get on and off coaches and boats. The tour pace of Essence of North India is rated Intermediate. A good level of fitness is required as you may be on your feet for approximately four hours in a day, though this will be interspersed with regular breaks and will vary from day to day. You will be walking around the sights, and you will be getting on and off coaches, trains and boats and climbing steps which may be irregular. You will stay in variety of hotels throughout the tour. Our guides will always endeavour to provide the highest level of service and assistance; however, they cannot be expected to cater for customers who are unfit to complete the itinerary.

The currency in India is the Rupee or Rs. The Rupee is a closed currency and officially you are not allowed to take any cash out of India. US Dollars and GBP are also widely accepted in India should you wish to keep an alternative currency on you. There are restrictions on taking Indian rupees into India. Visitors, including tourists, are not permitted to take any amount of Indian currency into the country. You can take cash or travellers' cheques (in pounds sterling or another foreign currency) and/or a bank card with you and exchange or withdraw rupees once in India. Cash machines will also be available throughout the tour in order to withdraw money in your local currency. It is important that you budget carefully and ensure you have the right form of currency before you arrive in the country.

It is important to budget carefully as you should not take any Rupee (LKR) out of Sri Lanka when you depart. There are foreign exchange offices and cash machines available in most places during your tour. Your tour guide will assist you at the start of your tour with currency exchange. Credit and debit cards are accepted in most hotels and some shops and restaurants; a charge is sometimes added for using them.

As normal practice you will be asked for your credit card details on check-in at the hotel in order to cover any extras incurred during your stay. If you do not have a credit card you may be asked for a cash deposit. American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted in hotels.

You will need to take some extra money with you to cover any personal purchases, such as souvenirs, laundry and extra drinks and snacks. Approximately £100 - £200 will be sufficient for the duration of the tour. It is a good idea to try and maintain a supply of small notes and change in the local currency for tipping or small purchases. Please also bear in mind that there will be several shopping opportunities throughout your tour.

Tipping

It is at your discretion to tip both your driver and guide. We would recommend to tip approximately £3 per person per day. This is a total of £27 per person to budget for tips on your trip. It is asked that you tip in pounds and not local currency, please do not give coins as these are difficult to exchange. If you want to additionally tip your Bell boy, porter etc this is up to your discretion.

The minimum number of travellers in your group will be 10 and the maximum will be 35. If in the unlikely event there are less than 10 people booked on your tour date, we will endeavour to reduce any disruption to your holiday and try to operate your tour with lower passenger numbers. If we are not able to operate your departure date then you may be asked to change to a different date and a full refund will be made available to you should this alternative not be suitable.

There is no minimum number of travellers for this extension however the main tour passenger numbers will apply for the main part of the tour. If in the unlikely event there are less than the required number of people booked on your main tour date then you may be asked to change to a different date. A full refund will be made available to you should this alternative not be suitable.

This is an escorted tour, meaning you will have the services of an English-speaking guide during each excursion ensuring that you have first-hand knowledge at all times. Also, local monument guides will be provided subject to the monument’s rules. For groups of 5 people or less you will have an English speaking Driver Guide or a Driver and Local/Monument Guides

Private Tour: If you have booked a private tour then you will be accompanied by a Driver Guide or a Driver and Local/Monument Guides. These will be available to you during all scheduled sightseeing.

Private Tours can depart on any day of the week depending on flight and train schedules and the opening days of the attractions. They will follow the itinerary as described in the brochure unless you have been advised otherwise and you will still have all of the same meals, sightseeing and local excursions included.

This is an escorted extension but not a group tour. You will be accompanied by driver guides throughout. In case of you booking a group of 7 passengers or above, a national guide will accompany you on mini coach along with the driver and assistant in the coach.

Safari Vehicles

Your safari will be taken in a canter, this is a large open roofed truck that seats up to 8 people. Safari drivers take you to areas of the park where wildlife are more likely to be seen but as with all wildlife experiences nothing can be guaranteed. Please note that many paths inside the park are bumpy and dusty.

Your accommodation is selected for convenience, location, comfort or character. Hotel accommodation is generally rated as local three to four-star standard, but please note there is no international classification system for hotels, and differences in facilities and quality do exist between the UK and India. All group tours hotels have private bathroom facilities and air-conditioning, where needed. Rest assured that all accommodation used by Mercury Holidays is regularly inspected by our staff and partners to ensure that standards meet your needs.

A triple room is available but please note that this will be a twin room with a fold away bed for the 3rd passenger.

Breakfast is always a combination of Indian and western style and served in the hotel each morning. Lunch and dinner will be taken in local Indian restaurants. A variety of restaurants are visited giving you the chance to experience a range of dishes and flavours. There are some dry hotels in India, and some hotels where alcohol can be consumed on the premise but must be brought in from outside. Your guide will pre-warn you of this and if anyone in the group would like to purchase drinks before getting then he will arrange for you to visit a local shop and get what you need wherever possible.

Please contact Customer Experience for questions about other dietary requirements or allergy information. Vegan, vegetarian and non-spicy meal options are available, all meal requests need to be sent over to our suppliers before travel.

It is not recommended to drink the tap water, even in developed countries water may contain unfamiliar elements that can cause upset stomachs. In less developed countries water is not filtered in the same way. 2 bottles of water are supplied per person per day on your tour.

Dry days are when the sale of alcohol is not allowed. Most of the Indian states observe these days on major national festivals/occasions such as Republic Day in January, Independence Day in August and Gandhi Jayanti in October. Dry days are also observed during elections in India.

During visits to Churches/Temples please note long trousers or skirts should be worn to cover knees, Long sleeved tops should be worn to cover shoulders and ladies should bring a scarf to cover your head. In the Golden Temple and any other Gurudara visit it is also mandatory for men also to cover their head with a scarf.

It is seen as respectful to cover your shoulders and not to expose too much skin in Sri Lanka, so it would be advisable to pack a shawl or similar for women to cover up, including wearing up to/covering your kness when entering religious buildings etc.

Please note that plastic bottles are banned in the national parks so keep a reusable water bottle for your tour.
