After nearly two weeks of research to find a boutique hotel for a weekend getaway, we decided to book at Mvngata. We were so happy we did. The rooms were meticulously clean and modern. The premium deluxe oceanfront was EXACTLY what we wanted. The service was fantastic and staff were very hospitable as well as welcoming, attentive and kind to us. Get the breakfast with your rate and you can order off the rooftop menu. Its awesome and available til 11. Chilaquiles, croque madame, avocado toast, the baguette caprese….all were amazing. With so many choices to stay, it was overwhelming to choose, but we loved this little gem of a boutique hotel. Bonus is that it’s 3 min walk from Coco’s Cabañas restaurant. Literally the most micro local place with ridiculously good food.

Small boutique that is absolutely stunning

Amazing place for a day pass! Good, tasty, food and great service. Prices are fair. The pool is great. There is a rooftop which has incredible views. The beach has some rocks but you can take a swim at the beach which is within just a two minute walk.

Let's start with what's great about this place: fantastic service. Everyone here is friendly but professional and really will go the extra mile to ensure your satisfaction.

That's it.

Now the bad stuff, but stuff they can change.

The beach chairs were filthy, some covered in bird droppings, and the cabana mattresses had heavily torn, dirty covers. None of it seemed like it saw any real attention. We spent 1 out of 6 afternoons there and never went back.

There was no place to work in the rooms. No desk or table. I run a business and needed to focus 1-2 hours a day. In fact, there were zero places to sit with back support in the rooms. All of the chairs seemed for napping. lol. I'm in my 40s. I need a proper chair sometimes.

The rooms need dehumidifiers (I stayed at a hotel closer to town last time I was in Playa and they had them). The only way to stave off an insane amount of condensation was to lower the AC to freezing levels. A degree over 22C and we were literally slipping on the tile floor.

But that's nitpicky stuff. Now for the truly bad parts.

One of the restaurants was closed. They didn't note this when we booked. It wouldn't have been a problem except that there are almost no other options as you're pretty remote and isolated from anything. The only real option is their rooftop restaurant. The food  there is terrible. I can't state this enough. IT IS TERRIBLE. We gave nearly the entire menu a fair shot and literally enjoyed nothing. They're continually trying to be too fancy and it usually just ends up weird, at best. At worst: friggin' disgusting.

The burger has the toughest patty and the wettest roll (not bun) we ever experienced. It was just slimey on the inside of the roll while the meat was likely ground from the cheapest beef available and cooked until tough and chewy. The bacon and egg sandwich was a take on egg salad in which the hardboiled egg was hot, sliced maybe 2 or 3 times, and then absolutely slathered in warm mayo. 

We ordered fries via room service and got sweet potato fries, for which there was no recourse. We were told that fries "come from a different place" and the room service attendant would have to pay for them. We ordered the Pescadillos via room service also, and they were totally inedible. The battered fish was definitely fried more than once (maybe more than twice), dark dark brown, and tougher and drier than actual jerky. I'd avoid room service here altogether. We expected the "chicken wrap" to be like chopped cold chicken and salad in a wrap, but was in fact more like a chimichanga or something. It was the one thing we did kind of enjoy, but not what we expected nor wanted.

There were things we didn't try, like the Tuna Eclairs 🤢, the Salmon Wellington (I can't imagine those textures 🤮), or the Santamar Burger (ham, manchego cheese, pineapple, onion rings, lettuce, and tomato). Like wtf even? For it being their only menu, it was small and not a menu of things you could eat for every single meal, every single day for a week.

Now the stuff they can't change. I hope you enjoy zero bathroom privacy because the bathrooms are completely open concept and you can hear, smell, and pretty much see everything. Enjoy the little toilet room's frosted glass door that casts a silhouette of you sitting on the can. Classy. That's fine for a lot of couples, I get that. Not many. Not us. I was annoyed. She was 100% mortified for the entire time. It was a nightmare. We wouldn't stay here again because of this.

Great service, good views, the rest is terrible.

Me and my sister were able to reserve a day pass. Access to beach club and rooftop. We were able to sit at the rooftop and receive the best care and attention from Julio! He is attentive and patient, friendly and easy to converse with. Other than his great service and food recommendation he was able to educate us about some of Mexico’s culture. Julio you are the BEST!
