Begin today's tour of Hanoi at the distinctive Presidential Palace. Wander through pristinely manicured botanical gardens to uncover Ho Chi Minh's modestly sized house on stilts, nestled amongst the tranquillity of this rural oasis. From here, journey to Hanoi's emblematic One Pillar Pagoda and the 10th Century Temple of Literature before embarking on a street food tour, where you can sample Dried Beef Mannequin, Hanoi bread and Kebab Rice Noodles, as well as the delightful flavours of Egg-milk coffee within the vibrant Dong Xuan Market. Continue to Hoa Lo Prison known by American POWs as the Hanoi Hilton and then to the bustling Old Quarter Street to experience the daily life of the locals, before enjoying a traditional Water Puppet Performance this evening.

This morning, transfer for your overnight cruise through Ha Long Bay. Glide across the emerald waters of Halong Bay and experience a vision of extraordinary beauty, snaking past a landscape of scattered islands, limestone karsts and enchanting grottoes. Anchoring at the mouth of a secluded cove, disembark for the unique opportunity to swim in the azure waters, before spending a relaxing night in the midst of Halong Bay.

After breakfast, discover the extraordinary underground Cu Chi tunnel network, spanning an astonishing 75 miles; famously housing hospitals, living quarters and weapon factories during the Vietnam war, these restricted passageways were used as the main base of operations by the Viet Cong. Return to Saigon for an afternoon tour begining at the War Remnants Museum; presenting a collection of retired artillery and weaponry artefacts, explore the harrowing exhibits which highlight the grim realities of the Vietnam War. Next, head towards the distinctive neo-Romanesque Notre Dame Cathedral and adjacent Saigon Post Office. Finally, experience a hive of activity amidst the vibrant market stalls of Ben Thanh Mar.

Today, travel to the Mekong and board a boat to spend the day on the river. After stopping at a coconut plantation and a traditional clay brickworks, continue towards a small rural village where you’ll take a short walk and enjoy some tea with a local family. Next, after taking a short ride through some nearby rice fields and vegetable plantations, you’ll be served lunch at a local house before taking a boat ride to Hùng Vương pier.

Following breakfast, enjoy the morning at leisure before flying to Siem Reap. The town has a contemporary outlook with a rich supply of boutique guesthouses, luxurious spas and an array of eateries, whilst retaining a small-town charm through its shaded boulevards, vivid markets and remarkable temples. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant with an evening at leisure. On arrival, you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel, then enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

After an early breakfast, visit to Tonle Sap, where you’ll have the opportunity to learn about life on the river before boarding a local boat and visiting the charming village of Chong Khneas. In the afternoon, you’ll continue to the remarkable 1st century Banteay Srei temple which, boasts some of the world's finest sandstone carvings depicting Hindu tales. At the end of the day, enjoy the sunset at Pre Rup Temple.

Siem Reap

Today, embark on a tour of the Angkor Wat complex; a stunning example of enduring devotion to the gods, this grandiose temple has been in constant use since its construction in 1112. Flanked by a commanding row of 54 stone figures, enter the South Gate of the Angkor Thom and visit the mesmerising gothic towers of Bayon and later the Baphuon, Phimeanakas and the Elephant Terrace. Following lunch, uncover the mystical Ta Prohm temple, partially engulfed by the jungle's burgeoning canopy, before enjoying a farewell dinner and traditional Apsara dance performance. Optional early morning departure (roughly 04:30am) to see the sunrise at Angkor Wat. After, return to the hotel for breakfast and then head back to explore Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. If you choose not to do the sunrise visit, you will join the rest of the group for the second visit instead.

This morning, visit some world-famous Buddhist temples across the city. Starting at Wat Trimitr, witness the Golden Buddha, the centrepiece of this remarkable site. Nex visit Wat Po, the largest temple complex in Bangkok and home to one of the country's longest and most impressive reclining Buddha, before visiting Thailand's most important landmark, The Grand Palace. The royal complex displays European-inspired halls partitioned by tranquil gardens, ornate pavilions representing 200 years of successive Kings and the magnificent golden chedi of Thailand's most sacred temple - Wat Phra Kaew. In the afternoon board a traditional long-tail boat to navigate Bangkok's khlongs, where local wooden-stilted houses line the banks. Pass the domineering Wat Arun temple, encrusted with porcelain mosaics that reflect the sunlight with a lustrous glow, before returning to your hotel for an evening at leisure.

Bangkok to Ayutthaya

Today, travel to the former capital of Ayutthaya which is situated 90 km north of Bangkok. This once buzzing international trading port is filled with the ruins of temples, palaces and shrines that make up the World Heritage-listed Ayutthaya Historical Park. Tour the principal sights, including the gigantic bronze statues of Wat Mongkol Borpith; Wat Phra Srisanpetch; and Wat Yai Chai Mongkol.

A half day sightseeing tour begins gazing 452 metres into the sky for a photo opportunity of one of Malaysia's most iconic buildings - Petronas Twin Towers. Continue to Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown district and immerse yourself in authentic oriental culture as you crisscross through swarming, vibrant market stalls. Next, witness Parliament House's unique contemporary design distinguished by its eleven triangular peaks, before a poignant visit to the National War Memorial monument, whose bronze cenotaph serves as a moving tribute to Malaysia's fallen Soldiers. Journey onwards to the New Kings Palace for a glimpse of the remarkable 22 golden domes enclosed within a heavily guarded palace complex, before heading to the grand Federal Court. Later, enjoy an evening at leisure.

A once-in-a-lifetime experience awaits this morning as you transfer to Semenggoh Nature Reserve to catch a glimpse of Borneo’s most famous residents. Established in 1975, this enchanting sanctuary rescues and nurtures orphaned Orangutans with the intention of releasing the endangered animals back into the wild. Roam the wooden walkways to observe these primates glide between the trees; they sometimes return to the centre at feeding time, for a chance to nibble on a tasty treat. Please note the Orangutans are semi-wild and sightings are not guaranteed.

Visit the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum located in the China town district of Singapore. Later this afternoon, explore an enormous variety of thriving flora at the National Orchid Garden within the city's beautiful Botanical Gardens. Finally, experience the buzz of Chinatown, winding through teeming market stalls and inhaling aromatic scents.

Vietnam visa requirements

A visa is not required for stays up to 45 days for British Citizens.

Cambodia visa requirements

A visa is required for entry into Cambodia and this will need to be purchased on arrival. The cost of this is approximately USD $30 per person and will need to be paid in cash. Please note that it is important that is plenty of space left in the passport, as a Cambodian visa alone takes up one page. Alternatively you can apply for your visa online at https://www.evisa.gov.kh/. If you are applying online you need to apply at least 4 days in advance.

Thailand visa requirements

A visa is not required before you travel to Thailand; you will be issued with a tourist visa valid for 30 days on arrival into the country. Further advice should be sought from the applicable tourist authority for other nationalities and for general queries. We strongly advise you check your destinations' Tourist Board or Embassy for the most up-to-date guidelines regarding visas and passport validity.

Borneo/Malaysia visa requirements

Declaration form: You must fill in the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) - https://imigresenonline.imi.gov.my/mdac/main to enter Malaysia. You should complete this within 3 days before your arrival. The forms need to be filled in, and the registration email/letter should be printed for presentation at the customs gate. See the Malaysian Immigration website - https://imigresenonline.imi.gov.my/mdac/main for further information, including exemption details.

Singapore Arrival Card: All arrivals in Singapore must complete an electronic SG Arrival Card in the 3 days before they enter Singapore. This online form asks for travel details and a health declaration. It is illegal to submit a false declaration. Biometric information is also recorded and scanned when you enter and depart Singapore (iris, facial and fingerprints).

Please note that final flight details will be confirmed on your e-ticket and final documentation which will be sent to you approximately 21 days before departure. All our tours feature a “Tour Pace” to help find the right holiday for you. To travel on any of our tours requires unaided mobility and the ability to stroll around the sights, climb stairs, and get on and off coaches and boats. The tour pace of the Grand Tour of Southeast Asia is rated as intermediate. This is largely due to the amount of travelling on flights and coaches. A good level of fitness is required as you may be on your feet for approximately four hours in a day, though this will be interspersed with regular breaks and will vary from day to day. You will be walking around the sights, getting on and off coaches, boats, and climbing steps which may be irregular. You will stay in a variety of hotels throughout the tour. Our guides will always endeavour to provide the highest level of service and assistance; however, they cannot be expected to cater for customers who are unfit to complete the itinerary.

Cash machines are available in all the major cities to withdraw money in the local currency.

Vietnam: The currency in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong (VND). You can exchange your currency in Vietnam, however, US Dollars are widely accepted in Vietnam should you wish to keep an alternative currency on you.

It is important that you budget carefully and ensure you have the right form of currency before you arrive in the country. Cash machines will also be available throughout the tour in order to withdraw money in your local currency.

As normal practice you may be asked for your credit card details on check-in at the hotel in order to cover any extras incurred during your stay. If you do not have a credit card, you may be asked for a cash deposit. MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted in hotels as well as American Express.

You will need to take money with you to cover any personal purchases such as souvenirs, laundry, any meals not included in the itinerary as well as drinks and any additional snacks. Approximately £600- £700 per person will be sufficient for the duration of the tour. It is a good idea to try and maintain a supply of small notes and change in the local currency for tipping or small purchases.

Tipping

Tipping is not compulsory and is at your discretion. However, Should you wish to tip we recommend you tip your guide approx USD $4 per person per day and your driver approx USD $2 per person per day. Please note tips on cruise ships are not included. If you wish to tip, we would recommend USD $2 per person per day. Additionally, if you would like to tip bell boys, porters, boat crew etc this is at your discretion. Tips are accepted in the local currency.

The minimum number of travellers in your group will be 10, and the maximum will be 35. If in the unlikely event there are less than 10 people booked on your tour date, we will endeavour to reduce any disruption to your holiday and try to operate your tour with lower passenger numbers. If we are not able to operate your departure date, then you may be asked to change to a different date and a full refund will be made available to you should this alternative not be suitable.

There is no minimum number of travellers for this extension however the main tour passenger numbers will apply for the main part of the tour. This is a fully escorted tour meaning that you will be met by a local guide in each of the cities that you visit, ensuring that you have first-hand knowledge at all times.

Boats

During this tour you will be boarding various vessels. Cabins come with en suite facilities and air conditioning. However room size can be restrictive, we recommend to take a smaller overnight bag on to the ship. This can be arranged by leaving your larger luggage on your tour bus overnight at your own risk.

Your accommodation is selected for convenience, location, comfort or character. Hotel accommodation is generally rated as local three to four-star standard, but please note there is no international classification system for hotels, and differences in facilities and quality do exist between the UK and Asia. All group tours hotels have private bathroom facilities and air-conditioning, where needed. Rest assured that all accommodation used by Mercury Holidays is regularly inspected by our staff and partners to ensure that standards meet your needs.

Breakfast is always western style and served in the hotel each morning. A variety of restaurants are visited giving you the chance to experience a range of dishes and flavours.

It is not recommended to drink the tap water, even in developed countries water may contain unfamiliar elements that can cause upset stomachs. In less developed countries water is not filtered in the same way.

If you are travelling within the below Vietnamese Public Holidays please note that celebrations can last a couple of days and during these times some businesses will be closed and coach, air and train travel may be affected. Tourist attractions will be open but may be crowded. Tet Holiday is between January and February, International Labour Day is on 1st May every year, Reunification Day is on 30th April every year and National Independence Day is on 2nd September every year.

The three most important Buddhist holidays in Thailand are Makha Bucha Day, Visakha Bucha Day and Asahna Bucha Day. All three are public holidays in Thailand. During this time many shops and business close for the celebrations. Because they are such important religious occasions, there are temporary restrictions in place on alcohol sales with entertainment venues in some areas also closing.

Malaysia celebrates a wide range of religious holidays, the main two being Hari Raya Aidilfitri to mark the end of Ramadan and Deepavali which is the festival of light. It is a time for people to be with their loved ones, self-reflect and renew their faith. Most attractions will not be closed during this time but might be busier than normal. It is advisable to be more covered up to show respect to the local customs. We would recommend that women cover their shoulders and knees and men should wear knee length shorts or trousers when out in public areas during these times

During visits to Churches/Temples please note both men and women need to wear long trousers or skirts to cover knees, Tops with sleeve’s should be worn to cover shoulders.
