UK to Hanoi

Depart on your scheduled overnight flight to Hanoi.

Hanoi

On arrival in Hanoi, you will be met by your driver and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure, giving you time to relax after your flight.

Day 3
Hanoi

Breakfast & Lunch

Today you will enjoy a tour of Hanoi, beginning with a visit to the Presidential Palace, built by the French colonialists in the early 20th century, and the residence of the Governor-General. Then, marvel at the famous One Pillar Pagoda. Your journey continues with a short drive out of the city centre to the Museum of Ethnology. Here, you'll gain fascinating insights into the diverse cultures and traditions of Vietnam's various ethnic groups. Returning to the heart of Hanoi, you'll explore the vibrant and bustling Old Quarter. Experience its charm and energy from the unique perspective of a cyclo ride, weaving through the narrow, lively streets. In the evening sit back and enjoy a thousand-year-old Water Puppet Show narrating Vietnamese folklore and daily life.

Hanoi to Halong Bay

This memorable day takes you to the awe-inspiring Halong Bay where you will explore these tranquil islands on a cruise boat, passing local towns and intricate limestone formations on the way. The limestone karsts formations are littered with beaches, caves and grottoes. Enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail party and a cooking demonstration class before savouring a delicious set dinner in the dining room. Evening activities are available including nighttime squid fishing.

Halong Bay to Hoi An

Breakfast

Awake to the rising sun's glistening reflection from the centre of Halong Bay and begin your day with some calming Tai Chi. After breakfast sail towards Tuan Chau Marina where you will disembark and head back to Hanoi airport, for your onward flight to Da Nang, Hoi An. On arrival in Hoi An you will be welcomed by your driver and transferred to your hotel.

Formerly one of Southeast Asia's chief ports, discover a labyrinth of riverside streets strewn with perfectly preserved Japanese merchant houses and Chinese tea warehouses. Explore this easily navigable town at leisure in the morning before joining a city tour in the afternoon, visiting the 17th century Japanese Pagoda Bridge.

Hoi An to Saigon

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Saigon. On arrival, you will be met by your driver and transferred to your hotel where you will have the evening at leisure.

Saigon

Breakfast & Lunch

Following breakfast, you'll embark on a fascinating visit to the Cu Chi district, renowned for the Cu Chi Tunnels. This impressive network of tunnels, stretching over 75 miles, served as the Viet Cong's headquarters during the Vietnam War. After lunch, transfer back to Saigon for your half-day city tour, where you will visit the War Museum, a museum that specialises in researching, collecting, and preserving evidence and consequences of the Vietnam War. Next, you'll visit the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral, a major centre of Catholicism in modern Vietnam and a prominent city landmark. Followed with a visit to Saigon Post Office, and then Ben Thanh market – where you can find everything from fresh produce and nuts to souvenirs and great bargains. Later, head back to your hotel for an evening at leisure.

Day 9
Saigon

Breakfast & Lunch

In the morning, embark on a journey from Saigon to the picturesque Mekong Delta. Upon arrival in Ben Tre, take a boat along the river to your first stop at a traditional brickwork factory. See how to make bricks in handy traditional method. Next, visit coconut processing workshops located along the canal. A short walk will bring you to a local family's home, where you'll be welcomed with fresh fruits and tea. This is a wonderful opportunity to chat with the locals and gain insight into their rural way of life. Continue by motor cart or bike along on shady road, pass by rice fields and vegetable plains to be able to touch on real life and find out about tropical culture. Enjoy lunch at local house nearby the canal before transferring back to Saigon for an evening at leisure.

Saigon to Siem Reap

Following breakfast, your morning will be at leisure before your pick-up to the airport for your afternoon flight to Siem Reap in Cambodia.

After breakfast enjoy a free day to explore the city in your own time, or simply relax by the hotel's inviting swimming pool.

Today proceed to watch the sunrise over the famous Angkor Wat temple, then discover the fortified city of Angkor Thom. After lunch, you will explore the jungle-covered Ta Prohm, undoubtedly the most atmospheric of all the ruins in Angkor. Optional early morning departure (roughly 04:30am) to see the sunrise at Angkor Wat. After, return to the hotel for breakfast and then head back to explore Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. If you choose not to do the sunrise visit, you will join the rest of the group for the second visit instead.

Day 13
Siem Reap

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Today visit the stunning Banteay Srei, a 10th-century Hindu temple dedicated to their god Shiva. In the afternoon take a boat trip to a charming local village on the biggest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, Tonle Sap. The rest of the day is at leisure before your evening meal.

Important Information

The order of events and sightseeing may vary according to local conditions or for operational purposes. The schedules of the domestic airlines in country are subject to frequent changes. For this reason, we have indicated approximate times only. Your local guide will inform you of any schedule changes as they are informed of them. Some road construction &/or weather conditions may lengthen the driving times. Our intention is to adhere to the day-to-day itinerary as printed; however, order of events and sightseeing may vary according to local conditions.

If booking more than 12 weeks before departure a deposit of €324.50pp will need to be paid at the time of booking with the full amount payable at 12 weeks prior to departure. The deposit applies to adults and children. If you are within 12 weeks of travel then the full balance of the holiday will be payable.

A visa is not required for stays up to 45 days for British Passport holders entering Vietnam. Further advice should be sought from the applicable tourist authority for other nationalities and for general queries. Passports must have at least 6 months validity from your date of entry and a minimum of 2 blank pages. However, we strongly advise you check your destinations' Tourist Board or Embassy for the most up-to-date guidelines regarding passport validity.

Cambodia visa requirements

For land border crossing you will need to purchase a visa for Cambodia which can be purchased on arrival. The cost of this is approximately USD $30 per person, which will need to be paid in cash. Please note that you will need to have at least one completely blank page in your passport for the Cambodian visa to be issued.

Please note that final flight details will be confirmed on your e-ticket and final documentation which will be sent to you approximately 21 days before departure. Weight restrictions will be finalized on your final documentation. Should you wish to take additional luggage you will need to pay extra at check-in. Check-in should be at least 3 hours before departure. If you wish to arrange Airport car parking or accommodation at preferential rates, we recommend you book this in advance with Holiday Extras on 0871 360 2000, quoting HX313.

IMPORTANT: A printed E-ticket is no longer required at check-in, all you need to do is present your passport to the staff at the desk and your boarding pass will be given to you. Please note that you should carry your invoice with flight details on it as you will need to show this at the airport.

It is important that you purchase travel insurance that suitably covers your participation in whatever activities you may undertake at the time that you make your booking. All our tours feature a “Tour Pace” to help find the right holiday for you. To travel on any of our tours requires unaided mobility and the ability to stroll around the sights, climb stairs and get on and off coaches and boats. The tour pace of Impressions of Vietnam is rated as Intermediate. A good level of fitness is required as you may be on your feet for approximately four hours in a day, though this will be interspersed with regular breaks and will vary from day to day. You will be walking around the sights, getting on and off coaches, boats and climbing steps which may be irregular. You will stay in variety of hotels throughout the tour. Our guides will always endeavour to provide the highest level of service and assistance; however, they cannot be expected to cater for customers who are unfit to complete the itinerary.

The currency in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong, known as VND. You can exchange your currency in Vietnam, however, US Dollars are widely accepted in Vietnam should you wish to keep an alternative currency on you. It is important that you budget carefully and ensure you have the right form of currency before you arrive in the country. Cash machines will also be available throughout the tour in order to withdraw money in local currency. Money can be exchanged at the airport or branches of government banks. Credit and debit cards are accepted in most hotels and some shops and restaurants.

The currency in Cambodia is the Cambodian Riel (KHM). We recommend that you take some US Dollars (USD) with you and exchange this currency whilst you are travelling. Cash machines will also be available throughout the tour in order to withdraw money in local currency.

As normal practice you may be asked for your credit card details on check-in at the hotel in order to cover any extras incurred during your stay. If you do not have a credit card, you may be asked for a cash deposit. MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted in hotels.

You will need to take some extra money with you to cover any personal purchases, such as souvenirs, laundry and extra drinks and snacks. Approximately £100 - £200 will be sufficient for the duration of the tour.

Tipping

Tipping is not compulsory and is at your discretion. However, Should you wish to tip in Vietnam and Cambodia we recommend you tip your guide approx. USD $4 per person per day and your driver approx. USD $2 per person per day. Please note tips on the cruise ships are not included either and would recommend USD $2 per person per day. Additionally, If you want to tip your Bell boy, porter, Boat Crew etc this is up to your discretion.

You will be accompanied by a Driver Guide or a Driver and Local Guides. These will be available to you during all scheduled sightseeing. Private Tours can depart on any day of the week depending on flight and train schedules and the opening days of the attractions. They will follow the itinerary as described in the brochure unless you have been advised otherwise and you will still have all of the same meals, sightseeing and local excursions included.

This extension tour to Cambodia is semi-escorted. Your guide will meet you at your Hanoi hotel and take to the airport. Day 10 will be at your leisure, whilst day 11 and 12 will be fully accompanied. You will be met by your guide on day 13 to take you to the airport for your return flight to London Heathrow.

Boats

During this tour you will be boarding various vessels. Cabins come with en suite facilities and air conditioning. However room size can be restrictive, If you would like to take a smaller overnight bag on to the ships this can be arranged by leaving your larger luggage on your tour bus overnight at your own risk.

Your accommodation is selected for convenience, location, comfort or character. Hotel accommodation is generally rated as local three to four-star standard, but please note there is no international classification system for hotels, and differences in facilities and quality do exist between the UK and Vietnam. All group tours hotels have private bathroom facilities and air-conditioning, where needed. Rest assured that all accommodation used by Mercury Holidays is regularly inspected by our staff and partners to ensure that standards meet your needs. Due to your flights landing early in the morning on arrival day we have arranged an early check in for you so you can freshen up before your tour commences.

Breakfast is always western style and served in the hotel each morning. Dinner (when included) will be taken in local restaurants or at the hotel. A variety of restaurants are visited giving you the chance to experience a range of dishes and flavours.

It is not recommended to drink the tap water, even in developed countries water may contain unfamiliar elements that can cause upset stomachs. In less developed countries water is not filtered in the same way. 2 bottles of water are supplied per day.

Tet is the most important event in the Vietnamese calendar, and it is a time for people to be with their loved ones and celebrate the Luna New Year. During this time many shops and business close for the celebrations which generally run for up to a week. Tet Holiday is between January and February, International Labour Day is on 1st May every year, Reunification Day is on 30th April every year and National Independence Day is on 2nd September every year.

During visits to Churches/Temples please note both men and women need to wear long trousers or skirts to cover knees, tops with sleeves should be worn to cover shoulders.

On your arrival in Saigon you will be met by a representative from our local agent, Lac Viet (LV) Travel, holding a sign displaying: “Mercury holidays or/ Your name”.
